Our youth now look forward in sharing what they have learnt with their various Circuits and Congregations.
Welcome back home youth and look forward in hearing more about your experience and await your participation and zeal to help move the church forward.

Youth to attend Youth Encuentro

The Bahamas/Turks and Caicos Islands District youth are gearing up to atttend Youth Encuentro 2010. I was eager about this trip.

On July 23rd Sister Johnique and I traveled to New Providence and when we got to the airport, we were greeted by Ms. Charlene Marshall, Summit Coordinator.

I was very excited to see the camp site and shocked that I had to sleep in dorms and not tents. I was looking forward to sleeping under the stars, but that was not to be the case. This did not bother me because I was determined to make the most of Children’s Summit, and that I did.

Every morning, at about five, we got up, and showered. I got up early each morning to make sure that I was in the shower before anyone else. You see, showers were limited, and I did not plan to be in a shower traffic jam. After taking our shower, we got breakfast and then participated in devotions.

In addition to devotions, we had lots of bible quizzes, games and lots to eat and drink. Friday was the best days!! An officer came in and spoke to us on peer pressure. That night was the highlight!! Kylon and I represented the Andros Circuit in the choral speaking competition and guess what? We won overall and we were the smallest circuit at the Summit. What an accomplishment! On Saturday, we went on a tour to Pirates of Nassau and the mall. Later there was a night of culture. It was very enjoyable because at the end there was a junkanoo rush out and we participated.

That night, I thought I was going to be in for a peaceful night, but rest was not on the minds of the other male participants. During the night, someone decided to decorate my face. When I woke I found my entire face pasted with toothpaste. When I saw myself I was in shock.

That same morning we went to church. After the service, it was time for departure, so we got our bags and we left the building. It was a great experience and I look forward to summit again.

By
Micah Russell-Andros Circuit

New School Opens

A new school has been opened in the new Circuit of our Conference, South Turks and Caicos Circuit. May God's blessings be with you.
We encourage all our teachers and wish them the very best in this school year as they play a major role in our children's lives. We also express thanks to the organisers of this evening to morning fellowship.

Youth Week On Its Way

The Andros Circuit began its Youth Week on Lord's Day, March 8th. Mark Christmas wrote this pastoral letter on MCCA Men Lord's Day, February 22 and I found it fit to post it on the blog with his permission, of course.

Today, we celebrate MCCA Men. Who is a MCCA man? All males who are 18 years or older. You would have read in your bulletins of the Inaugural MCCA Men's Assembly to be held in Jamaica in April. The Assembly forms the first step towards the formalization of MCCA Men as an umbrella organization for all men's group in the Connexion.
With the formation of MCCA Men, it will give greater voice to the specific interests and issues affecting the male membership of our churches. MCCA Men will not only make resources available to men but allow men to be the resources as well, enabling the work among men and boys.
Every year we are faced with challenges that affect men and boys, challenges that are physical, social, cultural, economical, religious and political, to name a few. There are some challenges that are common to men and women alike and there are challenges that are unique to men. There are challenges that are common to men universally, there are challenges that are common to men in the Bahamas as a whole and there are challenges that are unique to Andros.
The challenge of space and identity stems from the concept that "outside" is for boys and "inside" is for girls. As long as the girl is inside the "yard", she is fine, but the "road" or the "street" belongs to the boys. It is common then, for the "boys" to hang out on the "street corner" or around the bars or shops to 'lime', drink, smoke, chat, quarrel, fight, plan, watch passers-by or verbally harass the young women. It is what gives the male his identity or so it seems. To remain "inside", as a male, is to run the risk of being branded as a "sissy". If the male then identifies with the "outside", should the church then, move to the outside as well-beyond the four walls? Perhaps we should start by listening to Christ and to the men and boys, identify with them and all Christ to transform us into what he would want us to be and to do.

Andros Circuit Youth Week

The Andros Circuit will celebrate its Youth Week from March 8-14, 2009. Rev. Stacia Christmas and other chaperones conducted the gathering. It consisted of youth from Freeport, Nassau, Andros and the Turks and Caicos Island.
The first two days of youth gathering was no fun. Everyone complained because they were not use to sleeping on floors or bathing outside. Nonetheless, what would youth gathering be without some arguments?
However everyone adapted to the new surroundings and began to enjoy himself or herself. We shared in activities such as exercise, bible study, and other sessions whether on health or crime. Everyday held something new for us.
The late nights at youth gathering were extremely fun. I personally thought it was those nights we shared the most amongst ourselves, because no adults were present. We played games, shared stories that brought about a lot of laughter. However, those late night did not do any of us justice, because at 5am sharp, I mean sharp, came Rev. Stacia blowing her whistle up and down until everyone was wide awake. Everyone mumbled and grumbled in the morning because we hardly slept.
The night that truly brought all of the youth together was the night before we were scheduled to leave. That night, we had a closing service where everyone participated, whether in dance, song or telling a simple story. We also had a group come in to do a skit, which showed us that life without God is the wrong way. It also talked about drugs, losing lives and how friends try to keep us from God.
This skit touched the heart of every youth. At the end of the skit, they asked if there were anyone wanting to give their lives to God to come forward, so they can pray for us.
One by one many of the youth went up. Even I did. It was like the Holy Spirit filled my heart and said “Do not be afraid,” that he knew my troubles and that he would never leave me. Tears were rolling down my eyes and the eyes of my fellow youth. Nevertheless, it did not end there. A second question was asked, “Who ever thinks about committing suicide please come forward.” Believe it or not two, young persons went up. I was so surprised to see this. It truly opened my eyes to see that young people could be going through so much to make them even consider suicide. After everyone was prayed for, the service came to an end leaving everyone a new person, a saved person.
The night was still young and we did celebrate. We roasted marsh mellows and hot dogs on a bon fire we made. Rev. Mark Christmas got his share of fun. Cake was smashed in his face. Rev. Stacia was next, but she escaped before we could get to her.
Time went by so fast, leaving us hoping and praying that the next day would stay away, giving us few more minutes to have a good laugh.
Even though youth gathering was only for one week, within that week, a family was created. Long lasting friendships developed making us one. Morning came and it was time for the Turks and Caicos delicates to leave causing us to cry, not wanting them to go. The day was full of sadness as each group departed.
I truly enjoyed youth gathering. It was a time I got to truly express myself, making brothers and sisters in Christ and leaving with God in my heart. On the first Lord's Day, September 7, the children in the Andros Circuit dressed up nicely in their school uniforms and entered the Wesley Mount Zion Methodist Church for worship. The worship service was filled with hymns, choruses, scripture reading, prayers and reflections by our youth and teachers. The melodious music of the drums filled the room. This was led by Bro. Vincent Rolle, a steward and Acting Vice Principal of the North Andros High School. Johnte Curry shared in reflection on " My Exchange Experience" and Leroy Woodside Jr. shared on "My Youth Gathering Experience", which were two summer experiences. Sis. Terrice Carey-Curry then highlighted the achievements of our students, both academically and non-academically. We must say that we do have some high achievers like Leanne Woodside who achieved 6 BJCs, Micah Russell who achieved 3.7 gpa in grade five and is now the Head Boy of the Nicholls Town Primary School, and other children with 3 point plus gpa in their academics. We also celebrate with Kadisha Scott, who represented her school, Nicholls Town Primary, in the Primary Schools track and field games in Nassau, and the list continues..... However, we cannot forget our teachers, as mention was made of Sis. Terrice Curry (Principal) and Bro. Vincent Rolle(Acting Vice Principal). These are new appointments on the administrative staff of North Andros High School. The mediation was given by Rev. Mark Christmas.

We thank God for our teachers, children and youth. As they go back to school, we pray God's richest blessing on them for a successful school year. Keep up the good work , Methodist young people.

Commonwealth Youth Exchange Programme

The Commonwealth Youth Exchange Programme(CYE) began with the visit of eleven (11) young people from the Liverpool District of the Methodist Church in Britain to the Bahamas. They were led by Rev. Alistair and Sarah Lowe and Ms. Ruth East. The group visited the Nassau Circuit, August 5-16, Andros Circuit-August 16-26, and the Grand Bahama Circuit-August 26-Sept 2. While they were visiting these circuits they participated in various activities which covered tourism and social outreach. These included visit with the Governor General and the Minister of Tourism, Atlantis, Pirates of the Caribbean, All Saints Camp, Home outreach, Vacation Bible School, Urban Renewal, work on St. Paul's Methodist College, learning authentic craft, participation in worship services and prayer services. The group also found time to relax and enjoyed the sun, sea and sand on the islands, especially on Andros. New friendships were formed, and it is the hope of the youth in the Bahamas/Turks and Caicos Islands Conference (MCCA) to visit Liverpool in 2009 to complete the exchange experience.

We wish the team from Liverpool a safe journey back home. However, I will share some information of what happened. The Youth Gathering was the first after 16 years in our District Conference area. It started on July 25 and ended on July 31, 2008. It was held at the St. Paul's Methodist School in Grand Bahama under the theme, "We are the Branches: Abiding in Christ.". The youth were all excited as they gathered together from four of the five circuits. Oh, what an exciting feeling as they arrived one by one, two by two, three by three. The boys so graciously assisted the girls with their luggage and everyone began getting to know names. Down to St. Paul's Methodist College we went. The airbeds were opened, persons suffered from cultural shock but all knew that they had to adjust only for one week.
The daily sessions began with Keep Fit and yes, it was hard waking up the young people at times. Meals were made available, breakfast, lunch and dinner-you would think that you entered a restaurant. Informative and soul searching sessions took place, such as Bible Studies, Puppet Making, Dance, Tie-Dye, Crime and Violence, Anger Management, HIV/AIDS and STI's and Etiquette. The Youth Concert was the highlight as many of the campers gave their lives to Christ. What a moving experience that was when a christian drama group " Pages of Life" did a powerful drama of youth issues.
All work and no play make Jack and Jill a dull person. Yes indeed, there was much play as the campers were placed in groups- Roots, Fruits, Trunks and Branches. They were judged on duties for the day and the sports. Oh the sports! The young people had fun as they kicked off their shoes, ran with water leaking out of a cup, had horse rides around chairs and played basketball. The bond fire was a smash as hotdogs and marshmallows caused the bin to blow up and fly a few feet across the basket ball court. Well, well, the water fights( fun) and the face pacing with toothpaste, cream and cake or even anything the young people got their hands was a night for no sleep for counsellors, but it was all worth it.
In the end, with all the drama at the start and the dancing at the end, Youth Gathering 2008 was a success. Praise God!

Thanks to all we assisted with this ministry.

Bahamas/Turks and Caicos Islands Conference Youths on the move

Bahamas/Turks and Caicos Islands Youths are on the move. Finally, our blog is set up and we welcome comments and the sharing of information. The Youth Department of this Conference area is seeking to develop good relationships among youth, plus encouraging them to share activities that are happening in their circuits. It is hoped that many of our young people would take advantage of this opportunity to meet new friends from across the waters and to grow in Christ in 2009 and beyond. Youth leaders, ministers and the youth themselves are invited to share in this journey of blogging important information and exciting adventures.
Persons outside of our District are invitied to share. Do not be afraid to post your name as this will be a beginning of a long lasting friendship in Christ.
Please pray for the youth arm of our church. May God bless you as we share.

Stacia
